The Improved Product M1 (IPM1) Abrams was introduced in 1984. It was outwardly almost identical to the M1, except for removing or replacing the skirt over the drive sprocket with a new smaller skirt, removing the outer ring on the drive sprocket and adding a "bustle" basket to the rear of the turret. The IPM-1 retained the smaller 105mm main gun and incorporated armor improvements that are not visible. Production of the IPM-1 was halted at 84 tanks in 1986, when the Lima and Detroit tank plants were reconfigured to produce the up-gunned 120mm M1A1.
This IPM1 is a kit bash of several tank kits to built an IPM1, B-99, V Corps Germany, 11th Armored Cav. Regiment, 1st troop, in the late 1980s. It was purchased built. I modified it with details that I like to do. When I finished it and put it on the shelf next to my other M1 builds, I kind of got the clue I like M1s. I am getting a collection of them.
I have started using guitar string for antennas. I put a drop of white glue on the ends then paint them. I like the result and it is more consistent than using stretched sprue.
